Hi Folks,
I hope you’re getting your running in, despite da Mudda. I know it’s tough. The upside of weather like this, is that NOW is a great time to cross-train. The long miles are yet to come. So, if you can spare the need to run, work on a little yoga, weights, treadmill, or cycling. It will be very beneficial in the grand scheme of things.
Ms Lisa sent me an email announcing the Literacy Council Half Marathon training program. Registration for the program is February 12th and training starts February 19th. If you’re considering a long distance run this spring and you have some doubts as to your running ability, I encourage you to consider this training program. I (and many of us) were in the program a few years ago and I felt it was very beneficial to me. It was a springboard for my running the marathons I have. Please call 815.963.2171 for more information.
Marathon notes…….Thursday: it’s a 3 mile run. Saturday: it’s a 5 mile run. For first time marathoners, now is the time to try different things such as clothing, gels, nutrition, etc during your training and runs. It’s easy to try something now and find out it doesn’t work as you wanted. Long miles start in March, and doing some experimenting during these runs, may be unpleasant.
If there are any readers who want to participate in training for long runs (long runs as defined by your ability and ambition), please join us on our runs. The running group is open to anyone who wants to train for any length of races. While, we’re not a particularly fast group, we have fun sharing the running spirit.
Just a recap about the movie “Spirit of the Marathon ”. AWESOME! For those who missed the movie last week, there will be another showing on February 21st. If you ever ran Chicago , have ambitions to run Chicago, or you just want to know about some of the trials and tribulations that are part of the marathon experience, GO. Get your tickets today. I think besides the focus on the individuals, the movie brought back memories of when I ran Chicago back in 2005. (Yes, I tell my family and non-running friends, I raced against Deena Kastor, bronze Olympic medalist. Isn't it great to brag.) But, like the movie mention, when you cross the finish line, your life will be changed forever.
Speaking of Chicago...Registration opens on Friday. It will close on Saturday (just kidding). Registration for the Chicago Marathon opens on Friday, 2.1.08. It seems over the last few years, registration is closing earlier and earlier because it's reaching the registration limit. So, if you are considering a fall marathon and you're looking to enter the Chicago Marathon, please watch the website for registration information and the closing of registration.
If you want to share any ideas for a run, recovery, or race, pass them onto me. We can all use ideas on different running information.
Thursday, 01.31.08, Meet at Martin Park (north end). According to the schedule, this should be a 3-4 mile run. Recovery at Nunzio’s on North Second St . Meeting time is 6:00 pm.

Thursday, 02.07.08, Meet at Runners Image on East State St. For marathon training, this should be about a 3-4 mile run. Maybe some hills. Recovery at Vinny's in the 500 block of East State St. (The old Debbie's Little Italy). Meeting time is 6:00 pm.
"The first thing I did was tell everyone I know that I was training for a marathon. This was my way of guaranteeing that I would run it and not back down. After I made such a braggin' fool of myself, I had to run!" -Jim Miller in First Marathons
"In retrospect, running and racing the 26.2 miles has taught me an important lesson in life. The lesson is that I am in control at every mile of the 26.2-mile race. I decide whether or not to stop, slow down or pick up the pace. In life, I control who I am, where I am, where I am going, where I will be and who I will become." -M. Sue Bozgoz, Fayetteville, GA
Waddle On!
