Hi Folks,

Well, well, well. I went to flip the calendar today and I ran out of pages. It must mean something. I suppose a new year.

Happy New Years everyone. I hope you had a great holiday season. And for those who've taken a few days off from work, tomorrow is coming. But, remember what Annie said. The sun will come out tomorrow.

But, a new year has dawned. And with it, some new goals, yes, the resolution kind. I've mentioned to some folks that I hoped Santa brings them a PBR(Personal Best Record) for Christmas, and they rolled their eyes. And I mentioned to them that they should go see Steve at RI for some shoes that will trim seconds (heck minutes) from their race times, and they rolled their eyes even more. But let me suggest a slightly different approach to setting a PBR.

Pick a race where the distance is something that you haven't run before. If you've always run 5K's and 10K's, try a different distance. Try the State Street Mile or the 911 Run where the distance is 3K and
I'll guarantee you, without a shadow of a doubt, you'll set a PBR.

So, as we go into the new year, I suggest you challenge yourself. Set a new year's resolution to run a race where you can set a PBR even if the race is of a different length than you're used to. It's a goal. It's doable. It's a resolution that you check off. As for my resolution, I'm continuing to work on my goal of running Boston. I'll never get there, but hey, without goals, I might as well become ashes.

For those who are considering the Rockford Marathon in May and did not run today, you'll have some catch up work to do. Training for the race starts today. If you want more information including a training program compiled by Audrey, let me know and I'll forward it on to you.

Also, as you look at your training and race calendar for the next year, please consider volunteering for a race. All of the local races are run by a group of dedicated volunteers who enjoy running. It's one area where you can give back to the community. And many of the race directors seek runners to help out because of their knowledge in running. So, consider devoting some time to a race.

If you want to share any ideas for a run, recovery, or race, pass them onto me. We can all us a different venue for running.

Thursday, 1.3.08, meet at Martin Park on Riverside (north end of the parking lot) @ 6:00pm. Recovery is at Nunzio's on North Second St.

Saturday, 1.5.08, meet at Runners Image for a quick 9 mile run up along the downtown bike path. Recovery at the Mary’s Market Edgebrook. Meeting time is 7:00 am. I KNOW. Enough bike path running. But, this has been a crazy winter and I know this will be cleared of snow. Maybe next week, da Mudda will help clear the other paths.

Thursday 1.10.08, meet at Old Chicago on east State St for a quick run towards Midway Village. Meeting time is 6:00 pm. Recovery at Old Chicago.

"The marathon is like a bullfight, There are two ways to kill a bull, for instance. There is the easy way, for one. But the great matadors end up either dead or mauled because for them killing the bull is not nearly as important as how they kill the bull. They always approach the bull at the greatest risk to themselves, and I admire that. In the marathon, likewise, there are two ways to win. There's the easy way if all you care about is winning. You hang back and risk nothing. Then kick and try to nip the leaders in the end. Or you can push, challenge the others, make it an exciting race, risking everything. Maybe you lose, but as for me, I'd rather run a gutsy race, pushing all the way and lose,
then run a conservative, easy race only for a win."
